Crack open a book and look at the lines of letters on the page, If you can read, they might make you think, laugh, cry, or seethe with rage. But if you’re illiterate they’re meaningless marks: An obscure path on which you can’t embark, A secret code that keeps you out of the loop— Until you learn to read, it’s just alphabet soup. Inside every cell there’s special molecule that we call DNA, Made of nucleotide bases all linked together in a linear array Of “letters” that constitute the “book” of life: Instructions that render each of us rife With potential to perpetuate the loop Of life that emerged from the primordial soup. In the Beginning, all was one: a singularity. But it didn’t last because it couldn’t resist the pull of entropy. So, the Universe exploded into Being with a Big Bang, Bringing forth the physical forces that we know today: Strong and weak nuclear, electromagnetic, and the pull of gravity. Elementary particles emerged as the Universe began to cool, And coalesced into matter that came together into clouds That formed stars… That birthed planets! And that’s how Mother Earth came to be, As a hot mess with no atmosphere or sea, But as she cooled, she became the engine Of an autocatalytic loop That spawned our ancestral cells That forged the first genetic code From alphabet soup.

Amoeba 03:56
I'm an amoeba, you're an amoeba too, I'm an amoeba, you're an amoeba too, I am only one cell, but I can become two, I am only one cell, but I can become two. Division by mitosis, division by mitosis. Division by mitosis, division by mitosis. I'm an amoeba, you're an amoeba too, I'm an amoeba, you're an amoeba too. We are pseudopods so we don't need shoes, We are pseudopods so we don't need shoes. I'm an amoeba, you're an ameoba too, I'm an amoeba, you're an amoeba too. Ingestion by osmosis as food passes through, Ingestion by osmosis as food passes through. Ingestion by osmosis, ingestion by osmosis. Ingestion by osmosis, ingestion by osmosis. Two and two and four and four is eight, This is how we amoeba procreate. I might be you, you might be me, Living in our amoeba colony.

I am a Pump 05:47
There is a tiny crack in the corner of my basement where the water comes in when it rains, It would cover up the floor until I found a way to fix it with a wick and a tub for a drain, When the tub fills up I pour it into a bucket that I haul up the stairs to dump, And every time I do it get's me to thinking that by draining out my basement sump, I am a pump. I'm a pump. I'm a pump. I'm a pump. I'm a pump. To get the job done and just to stay alive I have to eat and drink most every day, It keeps my body going just as long as it keeps flowing down a path that goes only one way, Through my gut and my blood and my heart and my lungs and my kidneys it goes in and out, Through my cells and organelles that split protons from electrons, the voltage is what it's about, I am a pump. I'm a pump. I'm a pump. I'm a pump. I'm a pump. When a photon from the sun strikes floral chlorophyll an electron and a proton split apart, So the chlorophyll grabs an electron from a water to make oxygen and it's a start Of a complex evolution about finding a solution to maintain disequilibrium, So every time it rains I go downstairs to empty out my basement sump, I am a pump. I'm a pump. I'm a pump. I'm a pump. I'm a pump.

Well, it was down by the river by the waterside, Me and my baby by my side. Well don't you know we had to go down where the tall rushes grow When out the muck and out of the slime, Just my luck it was an awful time. So, baby see you later 'cause I have to go way down below, Never to go with the bubbles you know, Back in the sunshine. So, if you go down below with this feeling tonight, Don't look over your shoulder you know, Well, you might just catch a fright. Before I knew it, well I kind of blew it, thinking what was inside of me, So, baby see you later 'cause I have to go way down below, Never to go with the bubbles you know, Back in the sunshine.

Down Pressor 05:29
When I was young, I feared the down pressor, For you know I don’t need no master, Ten years later and I’ve come to see, No one has done this to me but me. The jail I’m in is only mine, Not really caring is the only crime, My bed is cold, and that’s what I get, And now that it’s made, I must lie in it. If I could change all the bad things I’ve done, If I could give back all the things that I’ve won, My life would be different, and I know that now The only thing I don’t know is how. As I wear my ball and chain, My dreams of freedom come alive again, I reach my fingers out to the sky, But I can’t touch it if I don’t try. When I was young, I feared the down pressor, Before you know I don’t need no master, Thirty years later and I’ve come to see, No one has done this to me but me.

Sittin’ on the couch at my mother's place, Just me and my son, and my acoustic bass. My kid’s just a baby, can’t even sit up. He’s definitely not ready for a sippy cup. So I pick up the bass and I begin to play, It’s just something to do to pass the time away. Then my kid starts to wiggle from his head to his feet, And we both start smilin’ ‘cause he’s movin’ to the beat. I said Francis, he dances! Said Francis, that baby boy dances. Well, the years go by, my mother’s gone, But she left her love of music to carry us on. My kids got bigger, now they’re grown, And they make music of their own. But I learned something there from that baby on the couch. When it’s dancing time, a baby ain’t no slouch. So when it comes to life, I know how to behave, Gotta make some beats from the cradle to the grave. ‘Cause Francis, he dances! Said Francis, that little boy dances.

Sitting on the porch with a bong in my hand, Watching the helicopter land, Amidst all the noise and confusion, I picked up my bong and I began to run, yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m getting stoned yes indeed I am. Getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Well fear and people persecute me, All I want to do is to be free. Johnny Law lifts a rock from the ground, Says “go tell everybody there’s a stoning in town!” Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Well, I smoke the rope, I smoke the rope, I guess I got to smoke dope ‘cause I just can’t cope. Hell, I smoke dope ‘cause I want to get high. I’ll take another hit, just to get by, ‘Cause the day, the pay, I’m makin’ my way, I like getting baked, to get through the day. So I toke, toke, and toke, and toke, it ain’t no joke, A way of life, and I’m stinkin’ of smoke. Take a hit off a joint and I hold my breath, Won’t let it out ‘til there’s nothing left. My brain explodes and my eyes bulge out, Smokin’ that herb’s what I’m talkin’ about, yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Only thing I did wrong was say what I think, You say “mister, now you stand on the brink”. I don’t know why these people must fuss and fight, Maybe they can’t tell the wrong from the right, no, no, no, I’m getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Well, you’re sitting there, and you don’t say nothin’, When you’re at home you’re a closet puffin’. All you people must go out and vote, And make it legal like tomatoes! Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Getting stoned, yes indeed I am. Getting stoned, yes indeed I am.

Spark:30 03:30
When I was a little boy, I used to play on the rug with my plastic toys. I never used to have a problem just makin’ it up. I got bored, wanted something new. I found something better than sucking on a brew, y’all, I sparked it once, twice, and three times on a Saturday night. Spark:30, I’ll do it again, Spark:30, you’re my friend, Spark:30, we’re gonna get high, We sparked it once, twice, three times on a Saturday night. Saturday night, off I streak, ‘Cause frustration reached a peak, Down to Jeff’s basement to play a little rock and roll. ‘Cause now I know what I’ve got to do, I get home from work feeling sad and blue, I step out back, and spark a new mentality. Spark:30, I’ll do it again, Spark:30, you’re my friend, Spark:30, we’re gonna get high, We sparked it once, twice, three times on a Saturday night.

Well, you see me with my suitcase in my hand, Yeah, you see me with my suitcase in my hand. I don't want to do the leaving, I'm just doing the best that I can. Well, you tried to make me happy all the time, Yeah, girl you tried to make me happy all the time. Now brother you do that to me, you know you're not a friend of mine. It's a long lonely highway all by yourself, Yes, it's a long lonely highway all by yourself. But you know sometimes the travelling's easier without anybody's help. So, you see me with my suitcase in my hand, Yeah, girl you see me with my suitcase in my hand. I don't want to do the leaving, I'm just doing the best that I can.

Rain fall down, I sit and cry. Try as I might, I can’t figure why. Everything I had was yours to take, I didn’t know my heart would break. Just want to make things better, Better in every way. I can’t go getting bitter ‘Bout something you couldn’t say. I rip wide open and the world crashes in, Have I committed some immortal sin? Anguish suffering my very soul, I wonder if I can ever be whole. Just want to make things better, Better in every way. I can’t go getting bitter About something you couldn’t say. I turn around and something is wrong, I turn and look and you are gone. Forgot the words I used yesterday, But as I stand here I still have to say: Just want to make things better, Better in every way. I can’t go getting bitter About something you couldn’t say.

I left the scene this morning at a quarter past 10, I may not get what how or why but I'm pretty good at knowing when It's time to go; now I'm on the road again, 'cause when it hits the fan, no you're not going to catch me downwind. Dr. Gonzo said "when the going gets weird the weird turn pro", Well that may be but as for me when things get weird I know It's time to go, got to ramble on again, 'cause when it hits the fan, no you're not going to catch me downwind. There's a pile of it on Wall Street and a big pile in Iraq, It's piling up in the atmosphere and there ain't no turning back It's time to go: turn on, tune in, and drop out again, 'cause when it hits the fan, no you're not going to catch me downwind. This party's been a blast you all, I've had a lot of fun, But things are getting out of hand so now I have to run It's time to go, got to get back home again, 'cause when it hits the fan, no you're not going to catch me downwind. Yeah, when it hits the fan, no you're not going to catch me downwind. When the shit hits the fan, you're not going to catch me downwind.

Once you were a star in my eyes, That only lasts ‘til someone dies, Maybe the law lets you hide from the truth, Someday maybe you’ll pay your dues. Was it me, was it everyone, One of the many hearts you’ve won. Now the world is closer to zero, As we count our fallen heroes. The bloody glove and the matching shoes, Outrun those with your flashy moves, Idolized for all these years, What you bring now are those burning tears. Was it me, was it everyone, One of the many hearts you’ve won. Now the world is closer to zero, As we count our fallen heroes. You had then what we all desire, We didn’t know that you were a liar, Hero to the world it seemed, What we know now we could have never dreamed. Was it me, was it everyone, One of the many hearts you’ve won. Now the world is closer to zero, As we count our fallen heroes.

Laura Lee 06:40
I didn’t know where I was going, I only knew where I had been. And every day it kept on snowing, All through a winter I thought would never end. So, I whiled away the time, Holed up in my dingy suite. I couldn’t find the way out of my worried mind ‘Til you found me, you brought the key, my Laura Lee. Before you came to town, I was a loner, Before you came around I was alone. And for oh so long I was so lonely, Before you came to town and turned my world around— And now I find I know how to be happy, And now I find I’m happy to be me, I have finally found what I need to be sound, Since you found me, you brought the key, my Laura Lee. Yeah, your love set me free: you are the key, my Laura Lee. Na-na-na-na-na-na- na now, Na-na-na-na-na, hey hey, Na-na-na-na-na-na- na now, You set me free, now can’t you see—that I love you, Yes, I love you. I love you, my Laura Lee Yes, I love you.

Static electricity, static, Static electricity, static. Rub a balloon up on your head and hold your hand up high, Positive and negative electrons meet and opposites collide. Static electricity, static, Static electricity, static. Me and my baby, we were in the tub, Me and my baby, now here’s the rub: We didn’t use a rubba dubba dub. We got ourselves a little baby now, bub. It was static electricity, static Static electricity, static. Rustle across the shag rug clad in stocking feet Go to give your baby a kiss but when your lips meet. Static electricity, static, Static electricity, static. Chicken Soup 04:06
I like a joint to get me off of the point, I like some wine to make me feel fine. But nothing ever through me for a loop Like a bowl of that lady’s chicken soup! Chicken soup, I had to have seconds, Chicken soup, it just felt like more. Chicken soup, so when a good time beckons, Chicken soup, I’m out on the floor. I know a girl named Linda Lou, She made me up this really wicked stew, One sip, I had enough, I think I know what she put on that stuff! It was Chicken soup, I didn’t want seconds, Chicken soup, it didn’t feel like more. Chicken soup, but it was stronger than I reckoned, Chicken soup, I got my ass out the door. You pick your nose, you’re pickin’ your butt. Now tell me, just how deep were you cut? With that look on your face, let me tell you what: They’re gonna lock you up, classified as a nut! Chicken soup, you had to have seconds, Chicken soup, it just felt like more. Chicken soup, so when a good time beckons, Chicken soup, you’re out on the floor.

Last night I had a dream, and it was on the battlefield, And it was mortal combat, neither side would yield. So when you’ve got to shoot, you better shoot to kill, ‘Cause if you don’t do it, then the other guy will. And when it’s over, there’s not much left to say. ‘Cept you really don’t want to have a really bad day in the battle today. Lizard woman and the Master Mash, they have to do their shit, And when it comes to killing, well, they do it for the fun of it. Learn to shoot and kick, shoot and kick and kill, And fifty cents says you’re gonna do it when you will. And when it’s over, you’ve got not much left to say. But you spent all your money, by yourself, in the penny arcade on a Saturday. If I was dictator, a mighty army at my command, And I took it into my head to steal the riches of another land, I’d educate the children, I’d bend them to my will. I’d put a joystick in their hands, and I’d show them how to kill. Power Rangers dominate their fantasy land. You see I’d put the trigger finger into their little hands, to fit into my plans.

Don't Cry 05:24
See the storm clouds on the horizon, The only thing they’ll bring is rain. Wash away your transgressions, Flush away all your pain. Don’t cry, pretty baby you’ll get what’s coming. Don’t cry, ‘cause that’s the way things are to be. Every tear you cry is an ocean, The tides will come, and they will go. Feel the waves only washing over you, That is all you need to know. Don’t cry, pretty baby you’ll get what’s coming. Don’t cry, ‘cause that’s the way things are to be. The other night I had a dream, With arms spread free and floating high I wondered then what it might mean, If hope and love were to die. Don’t cry, pretty baby you’ll get what’s coming. Don’t cry, ‘cause that’s the way things are to be. And if I climb the highest mountain, Just to see what I could see. The slightest slip would send me fallin’, And I would know that’s what’s to be. Don’t cry, pretty baby you’ll get what’s coming. Don’t cry, ‘cause that’s the way things are to be.

Give a little bit before you go, You've got to give a little bit before you go, You've got to give a little bit before you go, You've got to give a little bit before you go. Man comes up to me and he asks me for a dime, I put my head down and keep on walkin', I just can't seem to find the time. Then I see that same old man in his cardboard shack, Livin' down by the railroad where the other poor people are at. Give a little bit before you go, You've got to give a little bit before you go, You've got to give a little bit before you go, You've got to give a little bit before you go. See that girl standing right next to you, Deep down inside you know you love each other through and through. Still we find all of that time to fuss and fight, Acting like we've got nothing better to do on a Saturday night. Give a little bit before you go, You've got to give a little bit before you go, You've got to give a little bit before you go, You've got to give a little bit before you go. Politician comes up to you, asks you for your vote. Well, we’re trying not to laugh in his face, you know how politics is a joke. They promise us that they're going to work for us after election day. They’re with the fat cats in the back rooms now. See how those crooks behave! Give a little bit before you go, You've got to give a little bit before you go, You've got to give a little bit before you go, You've got to give a little bit before you go.

Take a look at the morning, take a look at the day, Entertain the thoughts of joy and play. Entertain the feelings of negativity, Unshackle your fetters and be free. Who knows where we might be tomorrow? We’d better live for today. If you live a life that’s filled with sorrow, Wake up one day, find it’s too late. I once knew a man, didn’t love his wife, Picture of agony and strife. I just saw his child, looked into her eyes, She sees the world with great surprise. Who knows where we might be tomorrow? We’d better live for today. If you live a life that’s filled with sorrow, Wake up one day, find it’s too late. Yeah, life is suffering, yeah life is pain, There would be no flowers without rain. Learn to see the beauty of every living thing, You won’t believe the joy it brings. Who knows where we might be tomorrow? We’d better live for today. If you live a life that’s filled with sorrow, Wake up one day, find it’s too late.
